Guessing Text Type by Structure
نویسنده
چکیده
Do structural patterns tell us something about the text content? In order to give a preliminary answer to this question, an experiment in automatic text classification is performed using only surface-structural features. The features extracted – as, e.g., the complexity, length or depth of text constituents (Köhler, 1999), – produced surprisingly good classification results. This finding argues for a deeper exploration of structure as an indicator not only of text content, but possibly also of the functional properties of language.

A confirmatory study of Differential Item Functioning on EFL reading comprehension
The present study aimed at investigating DIF sources on an EFL reading comprehension test. Accordingly, 2 DIF detection methods, logistic regression (LR) and item response theory (IRT), were used to flag emergent DIF of 203 (110 females & 93 males) Iranian EFL examinees’ performance on a reading comprehension test. Seven hypothetical DIF sources were examin...
متن کاملThe Impact of Correction for Guessing Formula on MC and Yes/No Vocabulary Tests' Scores
A standard correction for random guessing (cfg) formula on multiple-choice and Yes/Noexaminations was examined retrospectively in the scores of the intermediate female EFL learners in an English language school. The correctionwas a weighting formula for points awarded for correct answers, incorrect answers, and unanswered questions so that the expectedvalue of the increase in test score due to g...
متن کاملGuessing in Multiple Choice Questions: Challenges and Strategies
Introduction: Guessing is one of the most challenging issues in multiple choice questions. Several strategies, such as negative scoring, have been suggested for preventing students from choosing the right answer just by chance. However, there is no general agreement on using such strategies. The aim of this study was to review the scoring methods which are used for reducing guessing, and evalua...
متن کاملIranian EFL Learners’ Lexical Inferencing Strategies at Both Text and Sentence levels
Lexical inferencing is one of the most important strategies in vocabulary learning and it plays an important role in dealing with unknown words in a text. In this regard, the aim of this study was to determine the lexical inferencing strategies used by Iranian EFL learners when they encounter unknown words at both text and sentence levels. To this end, forty lower intermediate students were div...
متن کاملFast, Lean, and Accurate: Modeling Password Guessability Using Neural Networks
Human-chosen text passwords, today’s dominant form of authentication, are vulnerable to guessing attacks. Unfortunately, existing approaches for evaluating password strength by modeling adversarial password guessing are either inaccurate or orders of magnitude too large and too slow for real-time, client-side password checking. We propose using artificial neural networks to model text passwords...
